Wildlife Habitat and Education

Waste Management has a strong and enduring commitment to environmental responsibility. This commitment extends beyond meeting and surpassing all applicable regulations and standards; our intent is to be responsible stewards of the environment.

In 2006, the Richmond landfill facility received international recognition for its contribution to wildlife habitat conservation in the form of a Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) certification. Waste Management is the only waste management company to receive WHC certification. Learn more information about our WHC certifications.

Our seven-acre wildlife preserve provides a habitat to numerous species of birds and other wildlife, and our on-site learning centre is used by the general public, community groups, as well as primary schools and post-secondary institutions.

There are a number of wildlife and habitat initiatives occurring at the site, including:

  • Wood duck nesting boxes
  • Blue bird nesting boxes
  • WM Learning Centre
    • Grounds open to public 7 days a week, dawn to dusk.
    • Interpretive Centre open to the public on request
    • Iinteractive displays on recycling and wildlife education.
